Day 1!

My first day today as a Fortune Magazine intern went pretty well. I talked to my sponsor on the phone to talk about the list of tasks she sent me that we could accomplish over the course of the month. The list included 1) writing some blurbs for her newsletter 2) doing research for a diversity assessment project she is doing 3) sit in on interviews she's doing for a feature story 4) transcribing interviews 5) figuring out who I want to interview/what my own project will be. We talked on the phone about a possible project for me and we came up with a possible story about the Lower East Side Girl's club, a foundation she just attended a fundraiser for. And what's even more amazing is that she is trying to set up an interview with my favorite actress, Dianna Agron, who is associated with the foundation and who was in attendance at the same fundraiser as my sponsor. I doubt the interview will actually work out, but here's to hoping! After our call she sent me some news articles I was supposed to read and synopsize and I just finished doing that. The articles were about teen suicide rates increasing since 13 Reasons Why premiered, director Dee Rees speaking about discriminatory theatrical practices, Rodney King's daughter trying to keep the legacy of her father alive, and a list of the 50 Agents of Change in Hollywood.     Okay- I'll bite - what would I know Dianna Agron from? Her name doesn't sound familiar, but also I am horrible about knowing actresses names. Also- your internship sounds super cool- is this a career path you want to go into?

      Dianna was in Glee! And after doing this for a few days now, it is definitely something I am considering as a career later on!

Because I am a master procrastinator, this massive blog entry is more of a reflection than it is a real-time account of my May Project experience. My apologies for that! Kingdom House - Day 6-7

My last days volunteering at Kingdom House for May Project I helped Misty who heads children and adolescent services. I organized Misty's office and shredded some documents that she needed to get rid of. I then helped her with the meal sheet tally which basically consists of taking the government meal count worksheet and filling it out with the number of meals that were available each day and the number of people they served each day. To do this, I take the catering production sheets and copy down the number of meals the catering service provided onto the worksheet and then figuring out the number of kids who were present by totaling the kids' personal attendance sheets. This was a little tedious, but with earbuds in it was pretty relaxing. May Project week 2

This week has been something. Monday we taught at Cuivre Park Elementary school in Troy, Missouri. It was an hour drive away but I had music so it went by a little faster. When I arrived, the teachers were waiting outside with a speaker playing kids bop for the kids. I cringed and went into the main office to wait for our other boss and the other volunteers to arrive. Our 5th grade tour guide, Mckenze, then led us to her classroom. The teacher was very nice and helpful; she had snacks laid out for us and bottles of water. I immediately tried to figure out who the problem child would be. Then he presented himself, his name was James. He did not do any work but he participated in the activities at least. There was a nice little girl with glasses who kept asking me for help. She was very eager to learn and then she told me why she kept asking me for help.
