First Day of May Project - Pretty terrible

Today, I started volunteering at the Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center. Even though my mom had warned me about the location, I didn't realize quite how intimidating the area was until I got here. I drove in circles around the building before parking because I realized there was no parking lot and that I would have to park on the street, and I was honestly a little afraid about walking to the building by myself. When I got inside, I waited over an hour before my contact person came, texting my friends on my phone and reading my book to try to pass the time. After she arrived, she came in and told me she would be right back - she just had to set down her stuff, but she was excited because she had so much to do. She did not come back for three hours. She finally gave me the task of retyping some documents, but it only took 30 mins and I had nothing to do but to answer the phone that rang sporadically besides that. I was fine sitting down and reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and the news, but then I heard gunshots and my mood quickly shifted. I am also responsible with opening the door which kind of scares me a little considering the voice intercom doesn't work and I cannot communicate with the people who are here until I open the door for them. Everyone here is super nice though and are very interesting, but besides that I would not recommend being here, even to my worst enemy.

Well...that's a little dramatic, but even though I am not downright miserable, this has still not been the greatest volunteering experience, as I feel useless and uncomfortable.

  1. Elle- I kinda feel responsible, since I'm the one who told you about Annie Malone. I guess I should have insisted you go see it in person before you planned to work there. Lesson learned for me.
