Day 3,4, and 5!

So last Thursday, my sponsor published one of my own personal essays on to her newsletter along with the little blurbs I had written the day before! (check it out here!) After the article was published, Ellen, my sponsor, said that my work had received a lot of praise and attention from people who had written to her (not gonna lie, this felt AMAZING)! She even said someone had read it who lives in University City and wanted to do a little local news story about me and Ellen and I working together! (maybe you'll see me on TV lol). All in all, Thursday was a great day. Then Friday was a lot more chill. I did a few summaries in the morning and spent the afternoon doing some research for a diversity assessment Ellen (also she wants me to call her Ellen so that's why I'm referring to her as Ellen and not Ms. Mcgirt) is working on. This was one of the more boring things I've done so far, but still very interesting. Basically, I had to go back to Fortune's archives about the different conferences they have, and I had to count all the people of color and women who spoke on panels. This means I had to write down the names I saw next to each specific panel and then look each name up to get a glimpse into their racial and ethnic background.  To put this into perspective, each conference lasted two to three days and there were over a hundred people speaking at each conference. I only got through two conferences that afternoon because it took hours and she said that this was a long term project that didn't really have a due date. Even though Fortune as a whole is getting a lot better at implementing diverse speakers and presentations, they still have a ways to go before it is anything close to equal (the majority of speakers were white males). That was the end of my day on Friday. Then today, after my APES final, I did five more summaries. They ranged in topics from black female anime cosplayers to an NPR special I had to listen to about how inequality causes psychological stress. The most interesting topic I wrote about today, though, was how Antebellum abolitionists used photography to help end slavery. I had never heard of this, so it was super interesting to learn about. I'll post the link to the story I wrote about here. I'm really loving this.
